Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Nissan Use?
Not every Nissan key is the same, and understanding what you have matters enormously when it comes to replacement. Older Nissan models — roughly pre-2000 — used a basic metal key with no electronic component. From the early 2000s onward, most Nissans shipped with a transponder key, which carries a small chip inside the plastic head that must be electronically paired to the vehicle's immobilizer before the engine will start. A cut key that isn't programmed will unlock the door but won't crank the car. Then there are key fobs: some function as a standalone remote attached to a separate metal key, while others are integrated into a flip-style key. Newer Nissan models — including recent Rogue, Murano, and Maxima trims — use an Intelligent Key, Nissan's proximity-based smart key system that allows push-button starting as long as the fob is inside the vehicle.
Our technicians carry the diagnostic and programming equipment to handle every one of these configurations on location. When you call us, we'll ask for your year, make, model, and trim so we can confirm we have the right key blank and programming protocol loaded before we arrive. That preparation is why we're often faster than a dealership appointment — and without requiring you to tow your car anywhere.
